When do I need Apostille?

If you’re going overseas to work, study, or get married, you may be asked for identity documents to verify your credentials. Like this, when documents issued in Finland should be presented for foreign authorities for a certain reason, you will need an Apostille on your documents.
 

Apostille is the process which certify the official competence of the person who signed the document. Documents with an Apostille are valid for legal purposes in the countries that have ratified so-called Hague Apostille Convention. These documents with affixed Apostille do not need to be presented for legalization at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and do not require any further authentication by Embassy.

So, make sure that the country in which you need to present the document is party to the Convention.

For example, since Finland has signed the Convention, an official Finnish document is officially accepted in South Korea which is also signatory to the Convention if it contains an Apostille. 

Apostille in Finland

In Finland, you can ask The Digital and Population Data Services Agency to apostille your documents. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency provides services throughout Finland. So You may visit the most suitable service location for you, regardless of your area.

But before visiting one of their offices, make sure that the documents is the original one and that the signature on it is the original signature of issuer. Because Apostille can not be attached to  documents that has been signed electronically.

Also, you can obtain an Apostille only for documents that have been issued by public authority. If you want to get an Apostille for a private document, the notary public have to first certify the authenticity of the signature on the documents.
