"To clean or not to clean, that is the question." The internship dilemma.

2017.09.12

Here's another issue many parents complain about:

"My child is doing an internship, but all they do is file papers and clean the coffee room. 시간도 없는데 이걸 꼭 해야되요? >..<"

The short answer is yes.

The important thing is that the student is doing something outside of school, beyond studying or school-related activities. The second important thing is that the student is in an environment of the career field or subject field that they wish to pursue in post-secondary studies.

Colleges and universities want to see that if the student says, "I want to be a doctor." There is a reason or background story to why this student wants to spend over 10+ years furthering their education and going into greater debt. There is a direct correlation between experiences had and the amount of determination and success rate of a student. So while the student may not be dealing with sick patients directly or making life-changing diagnosis in their medical internship, they may indirectly witness things like economic disparity of patients who come to the medical facility. They may notice family dynamics and relationships or the psychology of patients who are admitted...these are all important skills in becoming a successful doctor too. Just being in an environment, surrounded by the daily ins and outs of a particular field give an advantage and perspective that goes beyond just words or fantastical ideas about a career field.

So, grab a clorox wipe and ask the supervisor is there anything else that needs to be cleaned. ^^
