Mr Obama Signed H.R. 1464, North Korea Child Welfare Act into Law.
KCC (Korean Church Coalition for North Korea Freedom)
On January 14, 2013, President Barack Obama signed H.R. 1464, North Korea Child Welfare Act into law. After four years, this bill has finally become law as a result of the hard work of many American North Korean human rights activists of all races and groups who have a heart to aid the suffering North Korean orphans in China.
By the President’s signature, the United States Congress, Senate and the President is one in recognizing that (1) hundreds of thousands of North Korean children suffer from malnutrition in North Korea, and North Korean children or children of one North Korean parent who are living outside of North Korea may face statelessness in neighboring countries;
and (2) the Secretary of State should advocate for the best interests of these children, including, when possible, facilitating immediate protection for those living outside North Korea through family reunification or, if appropriate and eligible in individual cases, domestic or international adoption.
Although the bill may have passed, the sufferings endured by our North Korean Orphans in China still exist, and unless the international community (especially the Korean Americans) continue to press for all provisions of this and the North Korean Human Rights Act of 2012 be enacted and enforced, this bill can be nothing more than a record in history.
KCC will continue to pray and push Until that Day that this bill allows the first North Korean orphan to enter into the United States and be adopted into a loving American family.
