A Traveler in Winter

겨울 나그네...
두터운 외투 움추려 껴입고
앙상하니 벌판에 서있다.
A traveler in winter---
bundles up in a thick coat, feeling small
stands on a bare barren field.


그가 바람앞에 굳굳할 수 있는건
멀지않은 시간, 맞이할 약속이 있기 때문이다.
If he can stand up firm against the wind,
that is because there is a promise, soon to come to greet him.


비록 황량한 겨울의 벌판에 서있을망정,
손맞잡을 따스한 설레임이 있음이다.
Though out on a forlorn wintry field,
he is expecting warm excitement of going hand in hand.

매운바람은 뜰에 세운 나그네를 향해,
찬기운을 들이대며 쉼없이 시험을 하지만,
제아무리 그래봐도, 종래 찾아오고말, 봄햇살...
Biting wind stops the traveler in the yard,
incessantly tests him with fierce cold;
Try hard as it might, spring sunlight is to come, most definitely ---

잎보다 꽃을 먼저피워 봄날 목련향기 줄거면서,
시련의 시간을 주는게 참 얄궂구나.
O wind, it is weirdly mischievous of you
to let us go through time of trials and tribulations,
when you know you would bring us fragrance of magnolias,
making them bloom before their leaves grow back on.

둘둘싸맨 겨울옷...
한거풀 두거풀 벗을때마다,
코끝에 와닿는 느낌이 자못 파릇하다.
Wrapped in winter clothing –
Each time he peels off one layer after another,
the sensation underneath the nose feels rather greenish.

한겨울 암중에 갇혔다 덜깬 영혼이 기꺼이 미소지을 것이기에 그렇고,
Trapped inside mid-winter darkness,
the half-awake souls are about to gladly smile;

나그네가 애써 킁킁이며 봄내음에 감각을 곳추세우는 건...
발밑에서 한창바쁜 세포분열과 그 생명의 소리를 듣기 위함이다.
The traveler strives to sharpen up the senses at spring scent, sniff-sniff ---
That is how he listens to the bustling cell divisions under his feet and the sound of their lives.

지금의 아픔을 딛고,
외롭고 고독한 인고의 시간을 힘껏 밀어올려,
새순의 기지개를 보고픈
겨울나그네의 간절한 기다림이다.
It is the heartfelt waiting of the traveler in winter
to see the stretching of sprouts
laboriously lifting up the lonely, solitary time of perseverance
stepping on the pain and sorrow here and now.

Lucerne Valley는 캘리포니아 주 모하비 사막 남부에 위치하고 있으며 로스앤젤레스에서 약 120 마일 떨어진 인구 6천의 사막 도시이다. 전직 한국 외교관인 시인은 2년 전 일리노이 주 시카고에서 이곳으로 이주하여 대추 농장을 소유 운영하고있다

Translator’s note

Lucerne Valley is located in the southern Mojave Desert, California, about 120 miles northeast of Los Angeles with a population of around 6,000. The poet, a former Korean diplomat lived in Chicago, Illinois before he moved to Lucerne Valley, California two years ago, where he now owns and manages the jujube farm with his wife.
