Truth and reason
1."The righteous mind; why good people are divided by politics and religion" by Jonathan Haidt.
2."Elephant and blind men", a poem by John Saxe.
-------
"Anyone who values truth should stop worshipping reason. Gut feelings drive strategic reasoning, which can make it difficult to connect with those across the gulf, especially for the liberals." - Ian Birrell, The Obserber, 2012-4-21.
--------
Please go to Google, type in 2. title above, click in, and click on John Saxe in the 3rd(?) on the list, and enjoy his
poem. Or click on http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/~philclub/Elephant.htm for the cartoon and his poem.
The elephant symbolizes truth based on depth, breadth and time. Each blind man with his limited understanding of reality
symbolizes reasoning - limited because reality is totality and
human reasoning is only a part of this reality. Reasoning with
facts and even with mathematics has it's limits
----------
"He (Haidt in 1), writes, "We effortlessly and intuitively 'see that' something is true, and then we work to find justifications and 'reasons why", which we can give to others" -without realizing that the facts given are only partial, or even 'manufactured'.
