How to get a National Police Certificate (NPC) AFP

2020.02.03

  1. 1. What is a National Police Certificate?

A National Police Certificate (NPC) contains a list of a person’s disclosable court outcomes and pending charges from all Australian police jurisdictions. This may include traffic and non-police prosecuted matters.

  1. 2. Why is NPC required?

If you have stayed in Australia for several months or years, your country of residence may need your Police Certificate to know whether you have history of crimes in Australia or not. The criteria for the residence period vary according to the laws of each country.

In most cases, NPC is needed when you emigrate or get a visa from another country.

For example, suppose you stayed in Australia for two years on working holidays and move to another country. Afterwards, you decided to emigrate to Canada. In this case, you have to submit your NPC to Canada accordingly (Canada requires Police Certificate for countries where applicants have resided for 6 months or more).

3. Then, how do I get a NPC?

You can prepare required documents by yourself and submit it by online or post to Australian Federal Police (AFP). Emailed applications will not be accepted.

But if you are going to submit NPC to other country which is apostille joined country, you need to get an apostille for the document (Translation and notarization may be necessary depending on the country).

Otherwise, if the country is non-apostille joined country, you need to get consular and embassy certification instead of apostille.
