How to Apostille a Birth Certificate

2020.04.21

If you’re planning to get married, obtain dual-citizenship, move, work, or open business overseas, you are asked to submit documents that require some procedures. A Birth Certificate is one of the documents needed to be issued from your home-country.

First of all, you have to see if your destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention because the document procedure depends on whether a signatory of the Hague Convention is or not.

As long as the destination country carries Apostille documents, you don’t need legalization by the Embassy / Consulate of the destination country since Apostille is equivalent to it. In other words, you just saved your time.

Second, you need to order a new birth certificate copy in your home-country. It is recommended that a birth certificate is issued within the past 12 months just in case. You can order a certified copy by visiting your home-country or each country’s website available.

Lastly, you have one more step. Your birth certificate must be authenticated from the same country where you obtained. But it is not that really easy to get it when you already arrived or stay in another country.

Imagine the hassle of the process to go back and forth only for a birth certificate.
