A to Z Guide To Use US Document Out Of US

2020.07.23

Hi, this is KICPC !
Are you guys all being fine?

We all seem to adapt in corona situation which has lasted more than a half of the year. Bad news is that corona situation seems to persist a lot more and the situation is getting worse in some countries. The most representative is US. The accumulated number of US people diagnosed as suffering corona is now over 4 million !

Under this situation, universities in US will start the semester in September. Many friends of mine give up the upcoming semester, due to not only corona situation but also probelms of VISA. Indeed they sold their flats and cars. Instead, they look for the opportunities for internship. Not only for international students but also for people who have stayed long in US to work, they may prepare some documents like proof of enrollment and career certificate.

In the case of this, submitting US document to somewhere else, there is onething you must do, called authentication. Authentication here means getting certification on the genuineness of the document and apostille and embassy attestation belong to this. The purposes of these two are the same but you cannot randomly choose either apostille or embassy attestation, when certifying. Whether you get apostille or not depends on the fact that the country to which you submit your document joins the Hague treaty, given that US is a part of the treaty.

If the country is a member of Hague treaty, you process apostille certification and if not you process embassy attestation. Then you may wonder what is difference. The difference is that apostille is simple. When you get apostille, you just get the certification from one country that originally creates the document. On the other hand, for embassy attestation you get certification from embassy of each country.

Before you get the certification, whether apostille or not, it is no surprise that you should tranlsate it in the language of the counter-country and notarize the translation because it is a matter of sending the document to foreign country. If the document you are to send is a public one and the recipient admit English as official, you don’t have to process it. If not, you have to.

To summarize, all you have to do to make use your US document in other countries for reasons like work, internship and so on are first traslate, second notarize, and then certification, apostille or embassy attestation. For apostille, there is one thing to be aware, which is you must get apostille on US document in US in that you can’t get it out of US.

What if you are alreay outside of US then? You should find someone in US to process all the procedures mentioned above on behalf you. But you may expectedly know that asking this kind of favor is not easy. So you’d better find professional agency who are willing to make things done for you.
