Chapter 5

Within a short walk of Longbourn lived a family with whom the Bennets were particularly intimate. Sir William Lucas had been formerly in trade in Meryton, where he had made a tolerable fortune, and risen to the honour of knighthood by an address to the king during his mayoralty. The distinction had perhaps been felt too strongly. It had given him a disgust to his business, and to his residence in a small market town; and, in quitting them both, he had removed with his family to a house about a mile from Meryton, denominated from that period Lucas Lodge, where he could think with pleasure of his own importance, and, unshackled by business, occupy himself solely in being civil to all the world. For, though elated by his rank, it did not render him supercilious; on the contrary, he was all attention to everybody. By nature inoffensive, friendly, and obliging, his presentation at St. James's had made him courteous.

롱번에서 조금 걸어가면 베넷가와 특별히 친하게 지내는 가정이 살고 있다. 윌리암 루카스경은 전에 메리톤에서 사업을 해서 적지 않은 돈을 벌었고 그가 시장으로 있는 동안에 왕에게 드리는 연설을 해서 기사의 영예를 얻게 되었다. 그는 기사의 작위를 아주 대단하게 생각했다. 그것 때문에 자기가 사업을 한다는 것, 그리고 조그만 시장 동네에 있는 자기의 집을 역겹다고 생각하게 되었다. 그래서 그 둘 모두를 정리하고 메리톤에서 1 마일쯤 떨어진 곳에 있는 집으로 가족과 함께 이사해서는 그 후 그 집을 루카스 로지라 불렀다. 거기에서 그는 자기가 중요하게 여기는 것들을 생각하는 즐거움을 가질 수 있었고 사업에서 자유로워지자 오로지 전 세계의 세태에 대해 관심을 기울이는데 집중할 수 있었다. 그는 기사 작위에 상당한 자부심을 가지기는 했지만 그렇다고 해서 다른 사람들 보다 아주 우월하다는 생각을 가지지는 않았다. 오히려, 그는 모든 사람들에게 관심을 가져 주었다. 천성적으로 다른 사람의 감정을 상하게 하지 않고, 친절하며, 자원해서 일하기를 즐기는 그는 성 야곱 교회에 참석하면서 다른 사람의 존경을 받는 젊잖은 사람이 되었다.

Lady Lucas was a very good kind of woman, not too clever to be a valuable neighbour to Mrs. Bennet. They had several children. The eldest of them, a sensible, intelligent young woman, about twenty-seven, was Elizabeth's intimate friend.

레이디 루카스는 아주 좋은 여자이고 미세스 베넷의 중요한 이웃이 되기에 과하게 영리한 여자도 아니었다. 그 부부는 몇 명의 아이들이 있었다. 그 중의 가장 나이 많은 착하고 지적인 딸은 스물 일곱살이었으며 엘리자베뜨의 친한 친구였다.

That the Miss Lucases and the Miss Bennets should meet to talk over a ball was absolutely necessary; and the morning after the assembly brought the former to Longbourn to hear and to communicate.

루카스가의 딸들과 베넷가의 딸들이 연회에서 만나 얘기를 나누는 것은 피할 수 없었다. 연회가 있었던 다음날 아침 루카스가의 딸들이 롱번으로 와서 서로 대화를 나눴다.

"You began the evening well, Charlotte," said Mrs. Bennet with civil self-command to Miss Lucas. "You were Mr. Bingley's first choice."

“샬롯, 저녁에 잘 시작했어.” 하고 미세스 베넷이 교양을 지키면서 미스 루카스에게말을 했다. “미스터 빙글리가 너를 첫번째 선택하지 않았니.”

"Yes; but he seemed to like his second better."

“그래요; 하지만 그 사람은 두번째 춤춘 사람을 더 좋아하는 것 같던데요.”

"Oh! you mean Jane, I suppose, because he danced with her twice. To be sure that did seem as if he admired her—indeed I rather believe he did—I heard something about it—but I hardly know what—something about Mr. Robinson."

“아! 제인을 말하는군. 하긴, 그 사람이 제인과 두 번 춤을 추었으니. 두 번 같이 춤을 추었다는 것은 그 사람이 제인을 좋게 생각한다는 것 아니겠어-정말로 그랬다고 믿고싶어- 내가 미스터 로빈슨에 대해 무엇인가를 들었는데 정확히는 모르겠어.


"Perhaps you mean what I overheard between him and Mr. Robinson; did not I mention it to you? Mr. Robinson's asking him how he liked our Meryton assemblies, and whether he did not think there were a great many pretty women in the room, and which he thought the prettiest? and his answering immediately to the last question: 'Oh! the eldest Miss Bennet, beyond a doubt; there cannot be two opinions on that point.'"

“아마 제가 미스터 빙글리와 미스터 로빈슨이 하는 대화를 어깨 넘어로 들은 걸 말씀하시는 것 같군요; 제가 말씀드리지 않았나요? 미스터 로빈슨이 그에게 우리의 메리톤 연회가 어땠느냐, 방 안에 아름다운 여자들이 많다고 생각하지 않았느냐 그리고 그 중에 누가 가장 예쁘다고 생각하냐고 물었어요. 그 마지막 질문에 대한 그의 즉각적인 대답은: ‘두 번 생각할 여지 없이 미스 베넷이지요; 거기에 대해 이견이 있을 수 없습니다.’”

"Upon my word! Well, that is very decided indeed—that does seem as if—but, however, it may all come to nothing, you know."

“와, 기분 죽이네! 그랬다면 정말 확실한것 처럼 보이는 군- 하지만 그래봐야 별 소득이 없을 수도 있는 걸 너도 알지 않니?”

"My overhearings were more to the purpose than yours, Eliza," said Charlotte. "Mr. Darcy is not so well worth listening to as his friend, is he?—poor Eliza!—to be only just tolerable."

“나는 엘리자 너 보다는 더 목적을 가지고 들었어” 하고 샬롯이 말했다. “미스터 다르씨는 그의 친구와는 달리 별로 들을 가치가 없잖아- 불쌍한 엘리자!- 참는 수 밖에는.”

"I beg you would not put it into Lizzy's head to be vexed by his ill-treatment, for he is such a disagreeable man, that it would be quite a misfortune to be liked by him. Mrs. Long told me last night that he sat close to her for half-an-hour without once opening his lips."

그 얘기를 리지에게 생각나게 해서 그의 못된 대우때문에 마음 상하는 일이 없게 해 줘. 그는 정말로 마음에 들지 않는 사람이고 따라서 그 사람이 누군가를 좋아한다면 이는 정말로 불행한 일이지. 어제 저녁 미세스 롱의 말에 의하면 그는 미세스 롱 옆에 30분 동안이나 않아 있으면서 입도 한 번 열지 않았다는군.”

"Are you quite sure, ma'am?—is not there a little mistake?" said Jane. "I certainly saw Mr. Darcy speaking to her."

“엄마, 그게 확실해? 뭔가 오해가 있는 것 같은데? 미스터 다르씨가 미세스 롱에게 말하는 것을 내가 확실히 봤거든.” 하고 제인이 말했다.

"Aye—because she asked him at last how he liked Netherfield, and he could not help answering her; but she said he seemed quite angry at being spoke to."

“쯪쯪-그건 미세스 롱이 참다 못해 네떠필드를 좋아하느냐고 물었고 그는 거기에 대해 대답하지 않을 수 없었기 때문이야. 하지만 미세스 롱의 말에 의하면 그는 말해야 하는 걸 화낸듯 하대.”

"Miss Bingley told me," said Jane, "that he never speaks much, unless among his intimate acquaintances. With them he is remarkably agreeable."

“미스터 빙글리의 말에 의하면 그는 아주 가까운 사람이 아니라면 절대로 말을 많이 하지 않는다고 해. 가까운 사람에게는 아주 친절하다던데.” 하고 제인이 말했다.

"I do not believe a word of it, my dear. If he had been so very agreeable, he would have talked to Mrs. Long. But I can guess how it was; everybody says that he is eat up with pride, and I dare say he had heard somehow that Mrs. Long does not keep a carriage, and had come to the ball in a hack chaise."

“이 바보 같으니, 나는 그 말 한 마디도 않믿어. 만약 그가 그렇게 사근사근하다면 미세스 롱과 대화를 나눴어야지. 하지만 왜 그랬는지 약간은 짐작이 가; 모든 사람은 그가 오만에 가득차 있다고 말하지. 미세스 롱이 자기 마차를 가지고 있지 않고 연회에 승합 마차를 타고 갔다는 얘기를 어디선가 들었을 거야.”

"I do not mind his not talking to Mrs. Long," said Miss Lucas, "but I wish he had danced with Eliza."

“그 사람이 미세스 롱과 대화를 나누지 않은 것은 별 상관없어요, 하지만 엘리자와는 춤을 추었으면 좋았을 거라고 생각해요.” 하고 미스 루카스가 말했다.

"Another time, Lizzy," said her mother, "I would not dance with him, if I were you."

“다음에 기회가 오겠지, 리지야.” 하고 그녀의 엄마가 말했다. “하지만 내가 너라면 그와는 춤추지 않을거야”

"I believe, ma'am, I may safely promise you never to dance with him."

“엄마께서 어련하실려구. 나도 엄마가 그와는 절대로 춤출 일이 없을 것이라고 보장해 드리지.”

"His pride," said Miss Lucas, "does not offend me so much as pride often does, because there is an excuse for it. One cannot wonder that so very fine a young man, with family, fortune, everything in his favour, should think highly of himself. If I may so express it, he has a right to be proud."

“가끔씩 볼 수 있는 오만한 사람의 경우와는 달리 그 사람의 오만은 나를 화나게 하진 않아요. 그럴만한 이유가 있잖아요. 그 사람처럼 정말로 잘 생기고, 가문 좋고, 돈 많고, 모든 일이 잘 돌아가는 사람이 자기 자신을 대단하게 생각하는 걸 이상하게 생각할 수 없지요. 이렇게 말해도 좋을지 모르지만, 그 사람은 오만할 자격이 있어요.” 하고 미스 루카스가 말했다.

"That is very true," replied Elizabeth, "and I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine."

“맞는 얘기야,” 하고 엘리자베뜨가 대답했다 “그 사람이 나의 자존심을 건드리지만 않았다면 나도 그의 오만에 대해서 개의치 않았을 거야.”

"Pride," observed Mary, who piqued herself upon the solidity of her reflections, "is a very common failing, I believe. By all that I have ever read, I am convinced that it is very common indeed; that human nature is particularly prone to it, and that there are very few of us who do not cherish a feeling of self-complacency on the score of some quality or other, real or imaginary. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."

“오만이란 아주 일반적으로 범하는 실수야. 내가 읽은 모든 것을 종합해 보면 그건 정말로 흔한게 확실해. 인간의 본성이 그렇게 되어있다구. 실제이든 혹은 상상이든 간에 무엇인가 좀 낳은 것을 가지고 있는 것에 대해 자부심을 느끼지 않는 사람은 별로 없어. 비록 두 단어가 혼용되기는 하지만 허세와 오만은 다른 것이야. 사람은 허세를 부리지 않으면서도 오만해 질 수 있어. 오만이란 우리 자신에 대한 우리의 평가와 관계있지만 허세란 다른 사람들이 우리를 어떻게 생각하게 할까와 관계있는 것이지.” 하고 자기가 확실한 기억을 가졌다는 사실을 우쭐해 하면서 메리가 말을 거들었다.

"If I were as rich as Mr. Darcy," cried a young Lucas, who came with his sisters, "I should not care how proud I was. I would keep a pack of foxhounds, and drink a bottle of wine a day."

“만약 내가 미스터 다르씨 정도로 부자라면 나는 오만하건 말건 신경쓰지 않을거야. 한 무리의 사냥개를 기르고 매일 포도주를 한 병씩 마실거야” 하고 자기의 누나들과 같이 온 막내 루카스가 소리쳤다.

"Then you would drink a great deal more than you ought," said Mrs. Bennet; "and if I were to see you at it, I should take away your bottle directly."

“그건 네가 마실 수 있는 양 보다 훨씬 많은 걸. 만약 네가 그렇게 마시는 걸 보면 내가 즉시 병을 빼앗아야 하겠지” 하고 미세스 베넷이 말했다.

The boy protested that she should not; she continued to declare that she would, and the argument ended only with the visit.

소년은 아줌마가 그러시면 않된다고 우기고 아줌마는 빼앗겠다고 굽히지 않고, 그 논쟁은 누군가의 방문이 있을 때 까지 지속되었다.
