Chapter 17

Elizabeth related to Jane the next day what had passed between Mr. Wickham and herself. Jane listened with astonishment and concern; she knew not how to believe that Mr. Darcy could be so unworthy of Mr. Bingley's regard; and yet, it was not in her nature to question the veracity of a young man of such amiable appearance as Wickham. The possibility of his having endured such unkindness, was enough to interest all her tender feelings; and nothing remained therefore to be done, but to think well of them both, to defend the conduct of each, and throw into the account of accident or mistake whatever could not be otherwise explained.

"They have both," said she, "been deceived, I dare say, in some way or other, of which we can form no idea. Interested people have perhaps misrepresented each to the other. It is, in short, impossible for us to conjecture the causes or circumstances which may have alienated them, without actual blame on either side."

"내가 감히 말하자면, 그 두 사람은 우리가 상상할 수 없는 방법으로 모두 어느 정도 속았던 거야. 서로에게 관심을 가진 사람들이 상대방에게 자신을 잘 못 나타낸 거지. 간단히 말하자면 우리로서는 실제의 비난이 무엇인지 모르면서 그들 서로를 등지게 한 사건이나 원인을 추정해 본다는 것은 불가능해" 하고 그녀가 말했다.

"Very true, indeed; and now, my dear Jane, what have you got to say on behalf of the interested people who have probably been concerned in the business? Do clear THEM too, or we shall be obliged to think ill of somebody?"

"정말 맞는 얘기야; 그런데 말이유 언니 양반, 이 사안에 틀림없이 관계가 있을 이해당사자를 대신해서 뭐라 말 할래? 그 사람들에 대해서도 명확히 하지 않으면 우리는 누군가를 나쁘게 생각하게 되지 않을까?"

"Laugh as much as you choose, but you will not laugh me out of my opinion. My dearest Lizzy, do but consider in what a disgraceful light it places Mr. Darcy, to be treating his father's favourite in such a manner, one whom his father had promised to provide for. It is impossible. No man of common humanity, no man who had any value for his character, could be capable of it. Can his most intimate friends be so excessively deceived in him? Oh! no."

"웃고 싶은 만큼 웃어주세요. 하지만 내 의견에 대해서는 웃지 못할거야. 내 사랑하는 꼬맹이 리지야, 아버지가 아꼈고 생활 비용을 주겠다고 약속했던 사람을 그렇게 다루었다고 한다면 이 사실이 미스터 다르씨에게 얼마나 치욕스런 평판이 될 지를 생각해 봐. 가능한 얘기가 아니야. 보통 정신을 가졌고 자기에 대해 조금이라도 자부심을 가지고 있는 사람이라면 그렇게 할 수 없어. 그의 가장 가까운 친구들이 그에 대해 감쪽 같이 속고있는 걸까? 그럴 순 없지."

"I can much more easily believe Mr. Bingley's being imposed on, than that Mr. Wickham should invent such a history of himself as he gave me last night; names, facts, everything mentioned without ceremony. If it be not so, let Mr. Darcy contradict it. Besides, there was truth in his looks."

"나는 미스터 윅햄이 어제 밤 내게 말해준 것 같은 자기의 과거를 꾸며내기 위해 노력을 했다기 보다는 미스터 빙글리가 속고 있다는 쪽으로 믿겠어; 이름들, 사실들, 모든 것들을 스스럼 없이 말했어. 만약 그게 사실이 아니라면 미스터 다르씨가 이를 증명해야 할 거야. 그리고 말야, 그의 모습이 진실을 말해주고 있었어."

"It is difficult indeed—it is distressing. One does not know what to think."

But Jane could think with certainty on only one point—that Mr. Bingley, if he HAD been imposed on, would have much to suffer when the affair became public.

하지만 제인은 오로지 한가지 점만 확신할 수 있었다..즉, 미스터 빙글리가 속고 있다면 그러한 사실이 밝혀졌을 때 그가 상당히 고통을 받으리란 사실이었다.

The two young ladies were summoned from the shrubbery, where this conversation passed, by the arrival of the very persons of whom they had been speaking; Mr. Bingley and his sisters came to give their personal invitation for the long-expected ball at Netherfield, which was fixed for the following Tuesday. The two ladies were delighted to see their dear friend again, called it an age since they had met, and repeatedly asked what she had been doing with herself since their separation. To the rest of the family they paid little attention; avoiding Mrs. Bennet as much as possible, saying not much to Elizabeth, and nothing at all to the others. They were soon gone again, rising from their seats with an activity which took their brother by surprise, and hurrying off as if eager to escape from Mrs. Bennet's civilities.

The prospect of the Netherfield ball was extremely agreeable to every female of the family. Mrs. Bennet chose to consider it as given in compliment to her eldest daughter, and was particularly flattered by receiving the invitation from Mr. Bingley himself, instead of a ceremonious card. Jane pictured to herself a happy evening in the society of her two friends, and the attentions of her brother; and Elizabeth thought with pleasure of dancing a great deal with Mr. Wickham, and of seeing a confirmation of everything in Mr. Darcy's look and behavior. The happiness anticipated by Catherine and Lydia depended less on any single event, or any particular person, for though they each, like Elizabeth, meant to dance half the evening with Mr. Wickham, he was be no means the only partner who could satisfy them, and a ball was, at any rate, a ball. And even Mary could assure her family that she had no disinclination for it.

가족의 모든 여자들에게 네떠필드 댄스 파티에 대한 전망은 아주 유쾌했다. 미세스 베넷은 이를 자기의 장녀에게 보내는 최대의 찬사라 여기기로 했고 특히 초청장을 보내는 대신에 빙글리 자신이 몸소 온 것에 대해 상당히 우쭐했다. 제인은 그 저녁에 두 명의 친구와 같이 시간을 보내고 그녀들의 오빠로부터 관심을 받는 것을 그려 보았다. 엘리자베뜨는 상당 시간을 미스터 윅햄과 같이 댄스를 추는 일을 즐겁게 상상했고, 또한 미스터 다르씨의 표정과 행동에서 모든 것을 확인해 볼 수 있다고 상상했다. 캐떠린과 리디아의 기쁨은 한가지 일이나 특별한 한 사람에 한정되지 않았다. 그들도 그 저녁의 절반을 미스터 윅햄과 같이 춤을 추려고 마음을 먹기는 했지만 그 사람 혼자만이 이들을 즐겁게 해 줄 수 있는 파트너는 아니었다. 어찌되었든 춤 파티는 춤 파니이니까. 매리 조차도 자기가 이 파티를 싫어하지 않는다고 가족들에게 확인해 주었다.


"While I can have my mornings to myself," said she, "it is enough—I think it is no sacrifice to join occasionally in evening engagements. Society has claims on us all; and I profess myself one of those who consider intervals of recreation and amusement as desirable for everybody."

"내가 나 혼자만의 아침 시간을 가질 수 있기는 하지만 그것이면 충분해. 종종 저녁 시간에 사람들과 어울린다고 해서 희생을 한다고는 생각하지 않아. 우리는 모두 사교모임에 속해있는 거야; 그리고 나도 여가와 여흥을 즐기는 휴식의 기간들이 모두에게 바람직하다는 의견을 가지고 있는 사람들 중의 하나라는 사실을 고백해야 하겠지." 하고 그녀가 말했다.

Elizabeth's spirits were so high on this occasion, that though she did not often speak unnecessarily to Mr. Collins, she could not help asking him whether he intended to accept Mr. Bingley's invitation, and if he did, whether he would think it proper to join in the evening's amusement; and she was rather surprised to find that he entertained no scruple whatever on that head, and was very far from dreading a rebuke either from the Archbishop, or Lady Catherine de Bourgh, by venturing to dance.

"I am by no means of the opinion, I assure you," said he, "that a ball of this kind, given by a young man of character, to respectable people, can have any evil tendency; and I am so far from objecting to dancing myself, that I shall hope to be honoured with the hands of all my fair cousins in the course of the evening; and I take this opportunity of soliciting yours, Miss Elizabeth, for the two first dances especially, a preference which I trust my cousin Jane will attribute to the right cause, and not to any disrespect for her."

Elizabeth felt herself completely taken in. She had fully proposed being engaged by Mr. Wickham for those very dances; and to have Mr. Collins instead! her liveliness had never been worse timed. There was no help for it, however. Mr. Wickham's happiness and her own were perforce delayed a little longer, and Mr. Collins' proposal accepted with as good a grace as she could. She was not better the pleased with his gallantry from the idea it suggested of something more. It now first struck her, that SHE was selected from among her sisters as worthy of being mistress of Hunsford Parsonage, and of assisting to form a quadrille table at Rosings, in the absence of more eligible visitors. The idea soon reached to conviction, as she observed his increasing civilities toward herself, and heard his frequent attempt at a compliment on her wit and vivacity; and though more astonished than gratified herself by this effect of her charms, it was not long before her mother gave her to understand that the probability of their marriage was extremely agreeable to HER. Elizabeth, however, did not choose to take the hint, being well aware that a serious dispute must be the consequence of any reply. Mr. Collins might never make the offer, and, till he did, it was useless to quarrel about him.

If there had not been a Netherfield ball to prepare for and talk of, the younger Miss Bennets would have been in a very pitiable state at this time, for form the day of the invitation, to the day of the ball, there was such a succession of rain as prevented their walking to Meryton once. No aunt, no officers, no news could be sought after—the very shoe-roses for Netherfield were got by proxy. Even Elizabeth might have found some trial of her patience in weather which totally suspended the improvement of her acquaintance with Mr. Wickham; and nothing less than a dance on Tuesday, could have made such a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday endurable to Kitty and Lydia.

만약 그들이 네떠필드 연회를 준비하고 여기에 대해 말하지 않았더라면 이 즈음 어린 동생들은 아주 처량한 신세가 되었을 것이다. 왜냐하면, 초청을 받은 날 부터 연회를 여는 날 까지 계속 비가 왔기 때문에 그들이 메리톤까지 걸어간다는 것이 불가능했기 때문이다. 이모도 없고, 장교들도 없고, 뉴스도 들을 수 없었다. 네떠필드에 신고 갈 신발의 장미장식이 대타가 되었다. 엘리자베뜨 조차도 미스터 윅햄과 좀 더 알 수 있는 시간을 완전히 연기해야 하는 날씨에 대해 인내심을 발휘해야 했다. 키티와 리디아는 만약 화요일에 있을 댄스가 없었다면 금요일, 토요일, 일요일 그리고 월요일을 참아내지 못했을 것이다.
