체면과 양심
An American writer pointed out that the most important thing
in Korean culture is face-saving; it is at the bottom of all
their daily life - money, power, fame, ..., mostly man-made, not
nature-made. Most of us were raised to believe that these man-made things would bring happiness, love, enjoyment,... as the results. But do they?
Money, power and fame can be tools but they are not the end results man needs. We can easily become the slaves of man-made
tools. We get confused the results with the tools, because the tools are not the feelings of happiness, love and enjoyment.
That's how we get over-consumed by 체면, ending in depression,
divorces and suicides.
We all have 양심, a lot or little; it's there in our mind's
corner somewhere, watching over me all the time. As A. Maslow said, "Masses of people lead lives of quiet desperation, and
go on to their graves with their songs still in them." By that time of death, voluntary or involuntary, it's too late. 양심 becomes too weak to wake us up to change the course.
My wife said this morning that even the preachers know deep down in their mind they are not following their 양심.
Life is short, only once, and now very close to ending!
Maybe, now is the best time to looking into that tiny piece of
양심, still left in everyone's heart, and change the course
to have a full taste of happiness life can offer.
