A good news for Alzheimer's

before memory loss", Alexandra Shifferlin, NYtimes.com 2013-

Shifferlin, NYtimes.com 2013-10-21.
------------
"phosphorylayed tau and beta amyloid (both are associated with
Alzheimer's) changed significantly in the spinal fluid for 265
middle-age participants in BIOCARD PROJECT IN 1995-2005.
"The ratio between tau and amyloid predicted mild cognitive decline 5 years before noticeable changes in memory occurred.
"Those with more tau protein than amyloid in their spinal fluid, were more likely to develope symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, and the more quickly the ratio of tau to amyloid increased, the sooner symptoms of memory loss occurred.
"Bcause Alzheimer's is characterized by the deposition of plaques in the brain, the results support the idea that the disease progresses, less amyloid is released into the spinal fluid, and more remains in the brain, where it compromises nerve function. Detecting when these plaques and tangles start to form may be critical in controlling, and eventually curing Alzheimer's, since currentn drugs, which are started once memory loss occurs, may be too late.
"Those average age of 87 with no signs of demetia, with more hardening of the arteries were likely to have amyloid plaques in the brain.
"Compared to people who had low amounts of amyloid plaques and brain legions, each unit of increase in arterial stiffnesswas associated with a two-to four fold increase in the odds of having both amyloid plaques and high amount of brain legions."
