One of the biggest stars of the 1980s dies of cancer in her Hawaii home

Kim Jin-ah, a South Korean actress who starred in a slew of films in the 1980s, died of cancer Wednesday in her Hawaii home aged 51, Yonhap reported.

The actress debuted in 1983 with the film “Different Time, Different Location,” followed by “My Daughter I Rescued From a Pit,” “I Can See Jamsu Bridge From the Window,” “Into the Heat of the Night,” “Eunuch,” “Highway,” “Math Diary.”

Popular for her sexy image, she continued to work into the 2000s and appeared in the television dramas “Empress Myeongseong” and “Love.” Her most recent project was the 2010 remake film “The Housemaid.”

Although she had put a pause on her acting, she ventured onto variety programming with SBS’s “Star Couple Show” as recently as 2011 and maintained her connection to the entertainment industry.

Kim’s younger brother, Kim Jin-geun, is also an actor.

“Kim Jin-geun left for Hawaii two months ago to spend the last days with his sister, and we heard news of her death this morning,” Taewon Art Media, his management company, announced Thursday.

Kim Jin-ah, who was the daughter of late actors Kim Jin-gyu and Kim Bo-ae, is known to have found out about her terminal cancer last spring, the company said.

“Her exact illness has not yet been confirmed. We only know that it was terminal cancer,” the company said. “Kim Jin-geun and the family spent the last two months in Hawaii and was with her when she passed. He plans to return to Korea in the middle of next month after the funeral.”
