Plaques and tangles
Two abnormalities are characteristic of the brain damage caused by alzheimer's; neuritic
plaque, a clump of pieces of dead neurons containing an insoluble substance called amyloid which is thought to cause much of neuron destruction, and neurofibrillar tangle,
a tightly twisted strand of insoluble proteins inside neuron.
"Pluripotent is a term applied to stem cells that can generate many different sorts of bodily
tissue, rather than just one sort, which is all that lesser stem cells can manage. Adult
skin cells can be made to behave like natural pluripotent cells by adding four activated genes to them. The result is known as an induced pluripotent stem(ips) cell.
AstraZeneca, a British Drug co. buys human heart muscle, blood vessels, nerve cells and
liver cells made from ips cells by Cellular Dynamics founded by James Thomson. One
purpose is to use them to find molecules that encourage non-ips cells to turn into mature
tissues. Such molecules could act as drugs that coax damaged tissue to heal itself.
Another is to use ips cells to test drugs.
Another research by GlaxoSmithCline, assaulted neurons derived from ips cells with
beta-amyloid, linked to Alzheimer's and then tested whether beta-amyloid responded to
hundreds of existing drugs - outside of human body.
iPerian has used ips cells to develop two antibodies that might be used to attack tau tangle
implicated in Alzheimer's, and also to clear up the inflammation of Alzheimer's and other
neurodegenerative conditions, That is a use far removed from the original idea of employing
stem cells regenerative medicine. " - The Economist, 1/12/2013.
They seem working hard new ways to cure Alzheimer's and others. Wouldn't it be a good
idea to do our part as much as possible, like exercises, to catch the first bus when it
arrives to pick us up?
