APOSTILLE
Are you going overseas to study, work or get married? Then you may be asked for some documents to verify your credentials. But the documents which are legal in one country are not necessarily legal in another. That is why you need to have Mongolian documents apostilled for use in foreign countries.
The term ‘Apostille’ refers to the Hague Apostille Convention, an international treaty signed by 120 countries (as of 2021). This treaty has established the Apostille process, which certifies the authenticity of a signature, stamp, or seal on a document produced in one country. This would allow the document to enter into force in member states of so-called Apostille Convention without requiring any re-certification.
In Mongolia, the State Great Hural ratified Mongolia’s accession to the Hague Apostille Convention in December 2008 and its provisions came into force in February 2009. So, if you have been told you need to apostille your Mongolian document, you should first make sure that the country in which you need to present the document is also party to the Convention. For example, an official Mongolian document is automatically recognized in South Korea if it contains an affixed Apostille because Mongolia and South Korea are affiliated via the Convention.
IN MONGOLIA
The very first step in order to get an Apostille in Mongolia is to ask the foreign authority what documents they want and which ones you have to get apostilled. Then you can apply for an Apostille on your documents from the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Гадаад харилцааны яам) in Ulaanbaatar. Please note that the signature of the Mongolian MFA official must be hand signed. An Apostille can not be attached to documents that have a signature made by stamp. Also, you can obtain an Apostille only for public documents and private documents first need to be certified by the Mongolian notary public.
