어떤 미국인의 이방인에 대한 친절

Kindness of One American to Foreigners

며칠 전 오랜만에 만난 딸아이의 친구 가족과 이름이 꽤 알려진 동네 태국식당에서 점심식사를 즐겁게 하며 우리 가족은 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었다.   오랜만에 화기애애한 웃음꽃이 피고 이런저런 이야기를 주고 받으며 우리는 맛있는 점심 식사를 하면서 즐거운 한 때를 보냈다.  

A few days ago, my family had a lunch with my daughter’s friend’s family at a Thai restaurant in a town.  We had a very good time with various happy conversation topics and really enjoyed a dinner together.  

이윽고 아내가 식사비를 지불하기 위하여 종업원에게 청구서를 가져다 달라고 하였다.  청구서를 받아본 아내는 고개를 갸우뚱하였다.  우리더러 누가 식사비를 미리 지불하였는가 하고 물었다.  아무도 없다고 했더니 그럼 다른 사람들에게 가야할 청구서가 혹 자기에게 온것이 아닌가 하고 종업원에게도 물어 보았더니 그 청구서가 우리에게 청구한 것으로 맞다는 것이었다.

After having a delicious lunch together, my wife requested a check to a waitress.  She was curious after receiving a check from the waitress.  She asked us who paid a check. And we said nobody.   She was wondering whether it is a wrong check which should be given to somebody and asked about it to the waitress.   She said it is a very correct check billed to us.  

식사비를 우리 모르게 누가 먼저 지불하였는가 하는 것 때문에 한바탕의 가벼운 소동이 일어났다.   그런데 이 선량한 범인(?)은 과연 누구였을까?  마침내 우리 테이블에서 가까운 곳에 앉아 있었던 어느 중년의 미국부인이 얼굴에 가벼운 미소를 띄우며 우리를 향해 자기가 모든 비용을 지불했다고 말하면서 우리가 행복하게 식사를 하고 담소하는 모습이 너무 좋아 당신께서 우리의 점심식사비용 일체를 흔쾌히 기쁜 마음으로 지불하였으니 그저 즐기라는 것이었다.  

There was a light bustle about the payee of the check.  Who was this kind criminal who paid for the check for us?  In the long run, we found that one middle aged lady who was sitting close to our table with gentle smile was suspicious.  She said she paid all for us and was so happy by just looking at our faces with happiness in the conversations from her table.  She added that please enjoy your lunch in full because she was very happy with our happy gathering and voluntarily paid all with her joy.      

우리가 깜짝 놀라며 기뻐하며 당신에게 진심으로 감사를 표한다고 했더니 즐거워하는 우리들을 보는 당신도 너무 행복하다는 것이었다.   돌려 받은 영수증에는 “Have a good day!.” 그리고 “Your family is precious!”라고 그분의 멋진 글이 씌어져 있었다.     

We were very surprised and said in unison “Thank you so much for your kindness!” She said she was just so happy with our smiles with happiness.  The customer receipt I received was written with two sentences “Have a good day ????.” and “Your family is precious.” in her beautiful handwriting.    

참으로 유쾌하고 가슴에 남는 일이었다. 한두명도 아니고 6명의 식사비를 선뜻 전혀 모른 이방인들에게 흔쾌히 지불하다니…  요즘처럼 세계 각국이 치열한 통상전쟁으로 날이면 날마다 싸우고 각 개인들도 거짓말과 사기를 밥먹듯이 하며 증오와 편견 그리고 폭력과 무지가 판치는 세상에 이처럼 사람 살 맛나게 해주는 아름답고 친절한 마음씨의 사람도 있구나 생각하니 나는 참으로 마음이 즐겁고 행복하였다.

It was a very pleasant moment in our hearts.   She paid the money for six foreign people…  These days many countries are fighting in trade and others issues daily and many people are living in the world of lying, fraud, hatred, prejudice, violence, and ignorance.  But, what an amazing and beautiful lady like this great woman with true kind and beautiful heart as one human being!  We were really touched with her pure kindness.           

간단히 연락처를 서로 주고 받고서 우리 내외가 꼭 식사대접을 해드리고 싶다고 그분께 약속하였다.   조그만 시골마을에 사시는 그분은 연로하신 당신의 어머님을 모시고 나들이겸 점심식사를 하기 위해 차를 몰고 이 식당에 오신 것 같았다.  처음 만났지만 진정 마음에서 우러나는 포옹을 서로 하고서 다시금 감사의 말씀을 전하고 헤어졌다.

We exchanged point of contact information with her.  We expressed our sincere thanks by suggesting treating her and her mother soon.  She said she came to this restaurant with her old mother from a nearby small town to have an excursion style lunch.   Although we did not know each other before, we hugged each other, and we gave our big thanks to them again.       

늦은 오후가 되어 내가 감사의 이메일과 전화로 문자를 보냈더니 그분으로부터 연락이 왔다.   여름에 얼마간 딸 집에 가 있을 것 같은데 8월 말쯤에 서로 만날 수 있을 것 같다고 나와 아내에게 문자를 보내왔다.

In late afternoon, I sent a thank you email and a text message.  She replied to me and my wife in the late night.  She said she will stay at her daughter in the other state and return to her hometown around the end of August.     

이러한 아름다운 깜짝 친절을 경험해 본적이 별로 없는 나로서는 그 날 내내 유쾌하였다.   살다 보면 이런 일도 있구나 하는 생각도 들었고…  미국에 내가 아무리 오래 살았다 할지라도 끼리끼리의 한국 문화에 더 익숙한 나로서는 전혀 모르는 이방인에게 이렇게 아무런 조건 없이 그저 기쁜 마음으로 친절을 베푸는 그분의 비단결 같은 마음씨에 깊은 감명을 받았다.  

It was quite unusual happy experience with surprise for me and my wife.  It made us so happy all day long.  What a surprising happy moment…  Even if I lived in America for a long time, I was quite impressed with her beautiful heart like silk with kindness toward a foreigner without any preconditions.     

이 날 나는 이 일로 인하여 친절의 의미에 대해 다시금 생각하게 되었고 이 세상에는 고약하고 별로 매력이 없어 가까이 하기엔 너무나 먼 사람들도 있는 반면에 이처럼 아름답고 매력적인 마음씨를 가진 멋진 분도 있구나 하는 생각도 들었다.   

I got a chance to think about the meaning of kindness by this happening that day.  There are groups of people with unfriendliness and not much attractions.   But, at the same time, there are groups of people with true kindness and attractive heart.  

좋은 일은 또 좋은 일을 계속하여 부른다는데, 나중에 그 분을 다시 만나게 되면 어떠한 아름답고 유익한 이야기를 서로 주고 받을지, 인생여정에서 평생의 소중한 벗이 될 수 있는지 서로 이야기 하면서 의기투합 할 것이라고 생각하면 벌써부터 나는 그 아름다운 기대감에 가슴이 무척 설렌다.

There is a saying that good things are calling good things.  I am so excited by just thinking the moment that we will get together.  We may exchange ideas about beautiful, useful, and memorable stories each other.  We will also surely discuss the idea of becoming lifelong friends each other without hesitation.  I am thrilled by just thinking those pleasant moments with beautiful expectations.     

그 분과 그 가족에게 무궁한 축복과 영광이 있으라!
